It does not even need to be in the "Connected" state at the VM and it does not need to have an ISO file. Add a virtual DVD/CDROM drive to the configuration of the VM (even if you have one). Hello, the install vmware tools is grayed out windows guest, linux host vmware workstation I have tried ejecting the cd/dvd and starting windows with it not connected (this results in a empty cd/dvd drive showing under my devices in the windows guest but no option to install vmware tools).You must perform a custom installation and include that component. The AppDefense component is not installed by default.

In the vSphere Client inventory, select the virtual machine and click the Summary tab. 
For vSphere virtual machines, determine whether you have the latest version of VMware Tools.Verify that the guest operating system is running.
